Meiji era (c. 1900) haribako (sewing box) with a unique arrangement of five drawers of various sizes including one drawer with a slide lid that helps keep small items from running astray (see picture 9).  This type of tansu chest was used to store valuables as well as equipment for the person of the house to do repairs on Kimono and bedding as well as money and valuables.
This haribako has keyaki (zelkova) wood case with kiri (paulownias) wood drawers (see picture 7).  Great skill was used in the workmanship in this chest.  It is made with all wooden pin and construction (see last picture).  All handles are made of forged copper with a rich aged patina.
This chest has been well used yet well loved and remains, with exception to some minor restoration (see picture 10), in  very fine condition throughout.  All drawers run smoothly.  Please enjoy viewing the enlarged photos of this chest. This chest measures 7 1/2" wide by 8" deep by 9 1/2" high (19 x 20 x 24 cm). Very solidly built, a great piece of Japanese history; and makes a great jewelry box or a classic desk top organizer today.
